Why should your organization sponsor the APACVS?
Sponsoring the APACVS gives your organization access to hundreds of clinicians who perform a vital and dynamic role in cardiac and thoracic surgery and critical care. PAs specializing in cardiac and thoracic surgery and critical care continue to expand in their clinical scope of practice and importance to hospital systems and surgical practices. Where does a PA in cardiac and thoracic surgery practice?
PAs practice in the operative suite, critical care unit, patient floors, and out-patient clinics. They answer consults to the surgical service. They also respond to urgent calls for assistance for patients in the Emergency Department.
PAs have traditionally functioned as assistant surgeons in the operative suite where they first and second assist during operations. Additionally, our skills in vein harvesting have always been part of our scope of practice but have become increasingly important in the era of endoscopic vein harvesting. Additionally, techniques and technology in Video Assisted Thoracic Surgery (VATS) are advancing and requiring excellent PAs to assist in these operations.
Critical Care Medicine is closely tied to cardiac and thoracic surgery and PAs are called on to participate in the intensivist role. This role involves frequent medication prescribing as well as critical care procedures.
