JoAnn Montecalvo MPAS, PA-C

I have been a Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery PA for the past 37 years. I completed my Physician Assistant training at Hershey Medical Center/Penn State University in 1983. I have always only worked in Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery. My first job as a new grad was with a private group of surgeons in Peoria, Illinois. I was the only PA at the time and literally learned by the “see one, do one, teach one” technique! It was a great experience. After 7 years there I moved back home to Pennsylvania and worked at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, PA. After 3 years there, a wonderful opportunity presented itself to me …a Chief PA position at Winthrop University Hospital, now NYU Winthrop Hospital, located on Long Island. I have been at Winthrop for the past 27 years as the Chief Cardiothoracic PA. Professionally , I have been fortunate enough to work at some of the best Institutions and with some of the most talented Surgeons and Colleagues in our field.

Over the years, I am proud to say that I have served as a Preceptor for PA students and I have also mentored many pre-PA students. Currently, I am an instructor for invasive line and chest tube insertions for our medical students and Residents at our Simulation Lab. I am a member of several professional organizations and have served on the Board of the APACVS for many years and in various capacities. I also serve on the Scientific Advisory Board for several companies and work as a Clinical Specialist for two companies. I love research and have had several articles published in different professional journals and serve on the Editorial Board for our professional journal, JAPACVS. I have been a speaker at various professional meetings and PA schools.

For the past 30 years, it has been exciting to see how our specialty and profession have evolved over time. Hopefully there will continue to be more job opportunities, less professional barriers, and possibly more independent practice in our future.

I do take time out of my busy schedule to travel the world, snow ski, golf, paddleboard and spend as much time with family and friends as possible.

I would like to take this opportunity to publicly commend our Cardiothoracic and Surgical Critical Care Physician Assistants and Nurse Practitioners for the outstanding job they did, and are still doing, during this recent pandemic.  They are some of the most dedicated, hard-working and compassionate professionals I have ever had the pleasure of working with, and I am proud and humbled to be apart of this incredible NYU Winthrop team.
